NASA HUNCH Visits The Career Academies of Decatur cover

NASA HUNCH Program Manager Scott Rodriguez, HUNCH Program Director George Kessler, along with Bill Gibson, Mike Lewis, and Robbie Harris from Voyager Space, recently visited The Career Academies of Decatur in Decatur, Alabama, to connect with students and educators shaping the future of manufacturing and engineering technology. The visit highlighted the school’s specialized programs, particularly the Precision Machining Academy, where students gain hands-on experience in blueprint reading, safety, CNC programming, and the use of precision measuring tools—essential skills for careers in advanced manufacturing.

Through this program, students can earn industry-recognized certifications from the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS), preparing them for high-demand technical careers. Beyond machining, In the past, academy students have participated in the NASA HUNCH Astronaut Culinary Challenge, where students develop food items for astronauts aboard the International Space Station—a national competition that The Culinary Arts Academy won in 2016.
