NASA’s Perseverance rover has completed a challenging 3.5-month climb to Jezero Crater’s rim, reaching “Lookout Hill” and beginning its fifth science campaign, the “Northern Rim.” This campaign will explore ancient Martian geology, including rocks from the crater’s formation 3.9 billion years ago, with the first stop at “Witch Hazel Hill,” a layered outcrop revealing Mars’ history. Perseverance’s mission focuses on astrobiology, caching samples for future return to Earth, and advancing Mars exploration as part of NASA’s Moon to Mars strategy.
